Self-Tape Lighting
How to Light a Self-Tape
Soft, even, and flattering — without a studio rig. The lighting that actually books a role, explained in plain English.
“Professional Lighting” Is a Myth. Soft Lighting Isn’t.
Anyone telling you that you need a professional studio rig is selling something. The real goal is simple: even light on your face, no harsh shadows. That’s it. A window does it for free. One affordable panel does it forever.
Three Ways to Light a Tape
Pick one. All three are submission-ready.

Best Free Option
Window Light (Free)
Face a large window — never let it sit behind you. If the sun is harsh, diffuse it with a sheer white curtain. Soft, directional, and casting genuinely cannot tell it cost nothing.

$60-100
The One-Light Setup
A single softbox or LED panel at a 45° angle, slightly above eye level. Bounce fill onto the shadow side with a white wall or a sheet of foam board. Done — $60 to $100 total.

Don't Bother
What to Skip
Ring lights (raccoon eyes and ringed catchlights), colored gels, full three-point “cinema” rigs, and anything that costs more than $150 to get started. None of it books you faster.

The 4 Lighting Mistakes That Get You Skipped
Casting notices these before they notice your read.
👊
Backlit by a Window
Light behind you turns your face into a silhouette. Turn around and face the window instead.
👻
Overhead Light Only
Ceiling light alone casts raccoon shadows under the eyes and nose. Get a light source in front of you.
🌡️
Mixed Color Temperature
Warm lamp plus cool daylight makes your skin look ill on camera. Keep every light the same temperature.
⚠️
Blown-Out & Too Bright
Overlit footage loses all detail in your face. Soft and even always beats bright.
