About Course
Learn the self-tape basics in one sitting. What is a self tape? It is an audition you record yourself and send to casting, and it is now the most common way actors get seen. This beginner course explains what a self tape is, why casting directors rely on them and exactly what they expect to see, in five short lessons.
Self-Tape Basics in Plain English

A self tape moves the audition room into your home. You film the scene with a reader off camera, then send the file by the deadline. The rules of the room still apply: be prepared, follow directions and make strong choices.
This course comes from The Creation Station Studios, a studio that recorded more than 10,000 self tapes in Los Angeles, Texas and New York since 2014. We wrote down what casting kept rewarding, so you can learn it in an hour.
Self-Tape Basics You Will Learn
- What a self tape is, and what it is not
- Why casting directors use self tapes, and what they look at first
- Self tape vs. in-person audition: what changes for you
- How to read a casting request and list every instruction
- The five parts of a strong self tape
